"The site-specific acrylic wall mural entitled Datsun Sunny Dissonance by Libyan-born, Pakistani-American artist Fawad Khan, now based in New York, literally explodes into the Dunlop Art Gallery space. Created over one week, the explosions are extravagant, yet flameless. The auto fused with the camo-forms is an old, derelict Datsun taxi Khan recalls riding in as a child growing up in Karachi. With their signature, taxi-cab-yellow rooftops and faded black bodies, these old vehicles, often patched up and overhauled with constant repairs, are still being used in Pakistan today. Most of them run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), in light of high gas prices and environmental regulations. More importantly, Khan wanted to use an auto which serves the public. Having a typical, mundane Datsun taxi in an explosive format with fragments of camouflaged soldiers speaks to the rising insurgency in the city, hints at fears of car bombs at any given time in any given location, and also illustrates a military presence within the public sector."
